Update - Day 158

Well, after a tough evening, night and morning -- we have some good news.

Barb's doctors say that she does not have an additional infection, and the VRE infection that she has been fighting is under control (although still not completely eliminated yet). The reason for her higher fever and the related discomfort was due the white blood cell transfusions which she began taking yesterday.
As the white cells attacked the infection, they increased the inflammation (part of the healing process), and then the increased inflammation caused the higher fever.

This evening and for the balance of the week, the doctors will manage Barb's inflammation pain & fevers with pain medication & Tylenol. Hopefully, by next week, the transfused white cells will have helped reduce the infection.

  1. Dear Barb, I hope that the transfused white cells will do their job and you start to feel better soon. I'm so sorry that you have to go through all this, as is everyone who loves you. My family will continue praying for you and wishing you the very best! Please try and keep strong, with positive thoughts!
    Love, Dianne xoxo

  2. Hi Barb - maybe future generations will be in debt to you and your courage in trying something new! Not that helps right now. Darrell's blog reminded me of when my kids were little and we did not even try to reduce fevers if not severe to let the white blood cells do their thing. Thinking of you and remembering our visit fondly. Love, Julie and Joel

  3. Good news, slowly, slowly and soon things will be turning for the better. It is hard to believe you have been in the hospital for 158 days. Thank god you have good doctors and good health insurance so you don't have to worry about those issues and just get well very soon and be back home. I look forward to the updates everyday I get on the computer so thank you Darrell.
    Lovingly,
    Rita

  5. Dear Barb and Darrell, You guys are awesome and tough and wonderful. I keep thinking of a day next summer when we will all be together looking back on this time, smiling and wondering how Barb had the determination and heart to make it through all the ups and downs of treatment. We love you, we feel your strength and send you ours. Much love and prayers and admiration, Cindy and Chuck
